Happy People

I fished with Vince Mathews on Grand Lake Stream, Maine. While  summer does not offer the best fishing conditions, Vince worked conscientiously to make sure I caught fish. He was waiting for me at the early morning appointed hour, and we were soon wading and looking for trout. I live on the coast of NC and mostly fish the warm, broad rivers and sounds. When I asked Vince to coach me on casting in this much smaller water, he offered good ideas and encouragement as I tried somewhat different techniques.

He provided an excellent picnic lunch in a beautiful setting, and we returned in the afternoon to sample runs and pools in Grand Lake Stream. Throughout the day he was a quiet, helpful, and genial companion, and I look forward to fishing with him again when I return to Maine.

Happy Couple

"I've had the privilege of fishing in some amazing places including, Alaska, Chile, Montana, Washington, and Colorado, to name a few. I've heard stories of the legendary brook trout of the Magalloway River in Maine. Immediately, this river was at the top of my list. I searched high and low for a guide to ensure my best chances of a successful trip. After some research, I came across Vince Mathews.

It's always a gamble hiring a guide. You never know what you're going to get. I've had my fair share of not great guide experiences. I booked Vince for a trip with my wife, who has never really casted a fly rod, for a Memorial Day trip.

With high expectations of catching a native big bad book trout, and getting my wife her first fish on a fly rod, we set out on the Magalloway. Vince knew everything there was to know about the history of the region, flora and fauna as well as the entomology of the river.

A handful of casts into the trip, my wife puts a beautiful brookie in the back of the net. Two fish for me and it wasn't even close to lunchtime. All of the sudden, my indicator goes down and my 5wt looks like it's about to explode. Reel screaming, Vince gets a glimpse of an VW bus sized, Maine brook trout. My knees are buckling, Vince is nice cool, calm and collected, with the net job. Mission accomplished. Vince's has a nice way with people; he has the ability to coach my wife the beginner  while giving me many tips to up my game.

Vince wanted to show us a few more places to make the most of our day. Vince was putting my wife on several fish at the next spot. I started to get a little jealous. I really wanted to get a fish on a dry fly. All of the sudden the hatch turns on and it's one after another. I didn't expect for my first Land- Locked Atlantic Salmon to be on a dry fly.

Fishing with Vince was an absolutely pleasure. Outside of having a radiant personality, Vince is extremely knowledgeable and more importantly, passionate. It was a pleasure spending our Memorial Day on the river with an Army veteran who far exceeded our expectations. As far as guides go, Vince is of the highest caliber."
